The Mecklenburg County Health Department will hold free, confidential HIV and syphilis testing Friday at Johnson C. Smith University.

The testing is being conducted as part of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. It's planned for 10a.m. to 4 p.m. in the counseling and testing building at the university, 100 Beatties Ford Road. The event is open to the public.

In Mecklenburg County, officials said African Americans make up 31 percent of the population but account for 69 percent of all HIV/AIDS cases.

The county health department also normally conducts free tests at two other locations: 2845 Beatties Ford Road and 249 Billingsley Road. Walk-ins are accepted or appointments can be made by calling 704-336-6500.
